Punanaamio

The cooperation between Pinja and Punanaamio once again reached a significant milestone – a reform of the online store.

Need for reform

Punanaamio’s need for eCommerce reform was driven by the end of support for the old Magento 1. The visual look of the store also needed an update.

Development

Much of the more advanced functions needed by Punanaamio was deployed with Magento 2 extensions pre-developed by Pinja. The goal in the layout design was to preserve the distinctive brand image of Punanaamio.

Communication is the key

An important part of the successful project is openness in the customer relationship. This makes it possible to carry out a large project efficiently and agilely, listening and learning from the other.

Instead of customizing the new implementation, the goal was to use as many of the standard functions of Magento 2 as possible, which already are better than in the old version of Magento.

Challenge: End of support for the old eCommerce system and need for a visual update

The long-lasting cooperation between Pinja and Punanaamio once again reached a significant milestone – a reform of the online store. The need for eCommerce reform was driven by both the end of support for the old Magento 1 and the need to update the visual look of the store. Magento 2 was a logical choice as a new eCommerce platform because it perfectly met the demands of the multi-channel business. In addition, multilingualism, extensibility and the future development prospects of Punanaamio supported the choice of the Magento 2 platform.

The solution: The eCommerce reform was carried out with Magento 2

The eCommerce reform was carried out effectively outside the main season of Punanaamio, thus ensuring the smoothness of the project without disrupting the business. In the project, it was considered important to identify the more important functionalities of the existing Magento 1 system, which has been developed for many years, and to implement them in the new eCommerce as well. The deployment of a new system is also always an opportunity to review the functionalities and weed out unnecessary ones. Instead of customizing the new implementation, the goal was to use as many of the standard functions of Magento 2 as possible, which already are better than in the old version of Magento.

Much of the more advanced functions needed by Punanaamio, such as a more advanced search function, extensive product filtering capabilities, and a one-page checkout, was deployed with Magento 2 extensions pre-developed by Pinja. This enabled us to keep the scope of the project at a suitable size and cost-effective in relation to the fast schedule. For the development of the eCommerce, the project itself is usually only an initial trigger, and also in the case of Punanaamio, the intention is to further develop the customers’ shopping experience and the purchase path as a whole to better serve end users.

The goal in the layout design was to preserve the distinctive and recognizable brand image of Punanaamio and provide even better usability to the end user. With its product and availability information, the eCommerce also supports and serves the customer base of Punanaamio stores as an online catalog, and taking this purpose into account in the deployment was an important part of the reform. From the outset, the design took into account mobile usability, as well as opportunities to improve search engine visibility.

Seamless collaboration between ecommerce and ERP

Punanaamio has long used Pinja’s system as the back-office system for processing the store’s cash registers and orders. In the reform, the back-office functions remained unchanged, and improvements were made mainly to the real-time capability and content of the data transfer between the systems.

Existing back-end systems and the information therein allowed the migration from Magento 1 to Magento 2 to take place only for product and customer data. This also enabled the centralize the customer’s resources in order to ensure the correctness of product data. Here, as in all our eCommerce projects, securing the search engine visibility gained over the years was paramount. Magento 2 enables even better technical and content search engine optimization, which will be reflected in better discoverability in the future, both for the Punanaamio brand and for products and product information.

An important part of the successful project is that long-term cooperation has created openness in the customer relationship. In addition to a successful outcome, this makes it possible to carry out a large project efficiently and agilely, listening and learning from the other.
