Metsä Group calls the Rauma sawmill the most modern sawmill of the world because its production is highly automated in comparison with traditional sawmills.
Metsä Fibre, which is part of the Metsä Group, is building the world’s most modern sawmill to Rauma and Pinja will be providing a MES solution for it.
The total cost of the sawmill investment is EUR 200 million and the estimated annual output is around 750,000 cubic meters of pine timber. The production is due for start in Q3/2022.
The cooperation between Pinja and Metsä Group began already in 2010 when the technology company provided system solutions to Metsä Wood’s plywood and laminated veneer lumber plants. Once complete, Rauma sawmill will be the seventh Metsä Fibre sawmill with a MES system provided by Pinja.
– Pinja is a long-standing partner in our sawmill business. We have developed our operations in all of our sawmills with them. The cooperation with Pinja has functioned with reliability, says Harri Haapaniemi, Project Director of the Rauma sawmill.
The MES solution that is to be provided to the Rauma sawmill includes iPES by Pinja (production planning and manufacturing controlling) as well as GEMA by Pinja (production data collection and control system). Pinja also delivers the PowerBI system for the management reporting needs.

Metsä Group calls the Rauma sawmill the most modern sawmill of the world because its production is highly automated in comparison with traditional sawmills. For example, machine vision and artificial intelligence have not been utilised to the same extent in the sawmilling industry before.
Sami Kajan, who is in charge of the business line focusing on industrial digitalisation, from Pinja, estimates that there is an interesting challenge ahead.
– We have provided production management, i.e. MES solutions to other sawmills of the group as well, but everything will be taken to the next level in Rauma. Traditional sawmills require a lot of manual work and multiple operators whereas in Rauma all operation is highly automated and operated through the central control station.
