The impact
Patient data flows reliably across all of HUS's connected systems every day.
Complex service handover completed on time and on budget.
All integration contacts centralised in a single point of contact.
A setup that supports ongoing improvement and future standards like FHIR.

Ensuring uninterrupted data flow during a high-risk transition
HUS’s information systems environment is one of the most complex in Finland: over 1,400 managed applications, 500+ active integrations, and 7,000 concurrent users of patient information systems at any given time. A vast amount of sensitive patient data passes between these systems every day.
Integration services had previously been part of a larger service package. As HUS IT Management prepared for a significant organisational change in 2022, it was decided to separate integration services and select a dedicated provider — one capable of taking on full responsibility for maintenance, monitoring, and further development of the platform.
The requirements were uncompromising: fast and uninterrupted communication between systems, reliable technical expertise, domestic support, and the ability to manage a live handover without disrupting healthcare operations.
Managed integration services with continuous monitoring and development
In spring 2022, HUS selected Pinja as its integration services provider, based in part on an existing track record of successful collaboration. Pinja took on responsibility for the HealthShare Health Connect platform — used by HUS and provided by global healthcare integration technology leader InterSystems — along with all related Service Desk services.
The transition project ran from May to November 2022 and was completed on time, despite the scale of the challenge: more than 500 live integrations, a simultaneous change of service provider, and tight deadlines. Alongside the handover itself, the project involved completing and updating documentation and introducing automated monitoring. Pinja’s team also underwent HealthShare training with InterSystems to ensure technical readiness from day one.
Today, the tripartite collaboration between HUS, Pinja, and InterSystems operates with a clear division of responsibilities: HUS IT Management as the client, InterSystems as the platform provider, and Pinja as the integration services partner. Regular meetings, open communication, and low-threshold issue-raising have kept the cooperation smooth.
“In my opinion, the crucial factors in the success of the schedule were that both parties were genuinely focused on the project, and that sufficient and competent resources were available. Pinja has taken on the new role well, and they have shown good responsiveness.”
“Important factors in smooth cooperation have been open interaction and raising issues with a low threshold. This has also been based on sufficient resources, regular meetings, and quick response.”
Reliable data flow that supports patient care
Since taking over the integration platform, Pinja has ensured reliable, uninterrupted operation across all of HUS’s 500+ integrations — handling millions of messages every month between patient information systems, financial systems, HR platforms, and more.
All integration-related contacts are now centralised through a single Service Desk, giving HUS a clear and consistent point of contact for maintenance, monitoring, and support. This simplifies operations and ensures that issues are tracked and resolved efficiently.
Pinja also contributes to the broader healthcare digitisation agenda as a member of HL7 Finland, the association that brings together health data users, system providers, and authorities around common standards.
Looking ahead, HUS’s FHIR FIRST policy — a commitment to using modern FHIR technology for future integrations — means the partnership will continue to evolve. Pinja is expected to play a central role in that next phase of development.
Key impacts include:
Delivered on time and on budget: the service handover was completed within the agreed six-month schedule and budget
Centralised service ownership: all maintenance, monitoring, and development contacts managed through one Service Desk
