Ovako, a leading European manufacturer of engineering steels, has chosen Pinja’s MES solution for its Imatra plant. The MES package delivered to Ovako includes production planning and operator views with work queues and sign-offs, as well as OEE monitoring of production. It also builds on a long-standing cooperation in the field of maintenance development.
The Imatra plant manufactures and develops high-tech steels for automotive and engineering industries for Finnish and international markets. The steels produced at the plant are sustainable, and thanks to the use of recycled scrap as the main raw material and low-carbon Nordic electricity, the carbon footprint of Ovako’s steel products is up to 80% lower than the global average.
The acquired MES system improves production performance and security of supply. The system provides information on production status, equipment usage, production performance, and quality. The information helps Ovako, for example, optimize production planning and processes, as well as improve efficiency, quality, and productivity.
– We have high expectations for the project, and I believe that our entire order-supply chain will be streamlined, while transparency and manageability will be significantly improved. We chose Pinja because the solutions suited us, and the client reference visits convinced us of the organization’s expertise. In addition, Pinja is the right size partner for Ovako; big and reliable enough, but small and agile enough to make us an important client for them, says Ilkka Uitti, Director of Ovako’s product unit.
Tero Jännes, Pinja’s Product Development Director, agrees.
– The acquisition of a MES system is often much more than just a system delivery. It is a process of change that requires rethinking and reorganizing existing approaches and ways of working. Ovako has committed to this change and that is why the cooperation has been productive and successful, says Jännes.
