SSAB Oulainen

Pinja created a simulation model of the fitting process, which made it possible to test the impact of different development measures.

Project goals

SSAB’s project was aimed at analysing the plant’s maximum capacity and the impact that different development measures would have on that capacity.

ABC analysis

A data-based ABC analysis was carried out on the product features, fittings, and volumes with the aim of prioritising the development measures.

Simulation

Based on the received information, Pinja created a simulation model of the fitting process.

The analysis verified our plan for the marching order of the development measures. We were also able to establish grounds for the repayment scheme of our investment plans.

The challenge: Improving production efficiency and production control

The project was aimed at analysing the plant’s maximum capacity and the impact that different development measures would have on that capacity. Moreover, the goal was to determine the most efficient ways of controlling material flows and to increase the share of refinement work of the total lead-time. At the same time, the project was aimed at looking for bottlenecks and for ways to open them up.

The solution: Analysing the present state of the pile fittings production and preparing a development plan

After the project conception phase, a data-based ABC analysis was carried out on the product features, fittings, and volumes with the aim of prioritising the development measures. The present state assessment also included observing the production process in view of identifying potential losses and problems.

Based on the received information, the project teams of SSAB and Pinja generated and compiled the development measures to be studied in the project. Pinja created a simulation model of the fitting process, which made it possible to test the impact of different development measures and control methods on the capacity.

“The analysis verified our plan for the marching order of the development measures. We were also able to establish grounds for the repayment scheme of our investment plans,” says Marko Kuitunen, Head of Product Portfolio and Process Management.
