Kokkolan HalpaHalli Oy is a long-established family business that currently employs over 1,300 people and operates 35 brick-and-mortar stores. In the midst of the retail industry transformation, HalpaHalli has boldly embraced the challenge and developed its digital business strategically with carefully selected partners. The entirety of digital services and their development is seen as a significant investment at HalpaHalli, and the development work is driven forward by the organization’s own e-commerce team.
HalpaHalli’s vision is to be the best multi-channel discount store for everyday life and seasonal needs, always with superior value for money. The core idea of HalpaHalli’s omnichannel model is that the consumer receives the same high-quality customer experience regardless of the channel – be it a physical store or a digital environment. This multi-channel service concept with its online store creates excellent conditions for this.

The collaboration with Pinja started back in 2003 with the HCL project. Joint development of the online store began in 2016, and after the definition phase, the online store was opened in spring 2017.
In addition to the technical implementation of the online store, Pinja has also designed the look of HalpaHalli’s online store to match the company’s brand. The digital look of the online store follows the corporate identity familiar from HalpaHalli’s stores and print media, with its colors and fonts. The online store is powered by Adobe Commerce (formerly Magento 2).
The online store is integrated with several different back-end systems, such as product information management (PIM) and ERP system. In addition, the site makes extensive use of artificial intelligence solutions from Pinja’s partner Klevu: search, smart categories, and product recommendations.
HalpaHalli’s e-commerce manager Tapani Mustonen describes the collaboration with Pinja as follows: “The most important element in the collaboration with Pinja has been a certain development path, which we have started to take forward together. We have made an annual plan that includes quarterly and weekly target points. There may always be bumps in the road and needs for changes in plans, and these new starts are made on a weekly basis in close cooperation with Pinja. The long-term goal is to grow the online store, and in this cooperation, Pinja has been a strategically important and close partner.”
