Jyte's browser-based quality monitoring system for outpatient care, Laatupankki, was created in cooperation with Pinja.
The health center of the Jyväskylä region (Jyte) operates in three municipalities in Central Finland: In Jyväskylä, Hankasalmi and Uurainen. It covers eight health centers: Hankasalmi, Huhtasuo, the Jyväskylä center, Kuokkala, Kyllö, Palokka, Uurainen and Vaajakoski.
When Jyte stopped to think about the availability and correctness of patient data, the need arose for a new way to measure the quality of care. Pinja was chosen as the partner to develop the solution.
Pinja was selected as Jyte’s partner to develop a way to systematically measure the quality of care, so that constantly updated, reliable information would be available to professionals.
As a result of Jyte and Pinja’s cooperation, the Laatupankki was born, the core of which is a data warehouse built on the basis of data imported from the patient information system.
The quality bank is continuously developed as needed and based on increasing information. Expanding the content is easy, because any operational system can be connected to the Laatupankki as a data source.
What actually happens in the reception room or other care contact? Does our system only reach those who actively seek care, or do we also provide care to those who are slower to seek it and often benefit most from it?
“These are the questions we stopped to think about in 2015 at the health centers of the Jyväskylä region (Jyte)” says Aapo Tahkola, developing doctor of outpatient care at Jyte. The need arose for systematic measurement of the quality of care so that up-to-date, reliable data would be available to all professionals.
“In collaboration with Pinja, a suitable tool was finally developed – a browser-based quality monitoring system for outpatient care, the Jyte Laatupankki (quality bank). Laatupankki and the continuous quality improvement processes are continuously developed on the basis of changing needs and increasing knowledge. The goal is a determined, sustained and measurable improvement in the quality of care.
Laatupankki has played an important role in improving the quality of care for our patients, especially for our coronary heart disease patients, and in improving the balance of care for blood thinner treatments. Even when estimating conservatively, we have been able to avoid many heart attacks and strokes in our population through this work. By these measures, Jyte is currently offering probably the best care in Finland, and the results are also remarkably good when comparing internationally” says Tahkola.
At the heart of Laatupankki is a data warehouse (DW) built from data imported from the patient information system. Software logic on top of the data warehouse creates automatically updated measures of treatment balance and follow-up coverage available to healthcare professionals. Currently, the system is able to monitor the quality of care for diabetes, blood thinners and certain arterial diseases. In addition, Laatupankki provides access to a comprehensive set of general information within the patient information systems. Any operational system can be connected to Laatupankki as a data source. Therefore, it is easy to expand the use and content of Laatupankki.
So Jyte is on the verge of something important, clarifying the core mission of health care, which is to promote health and good care of diseases. We at Pinja are happy to be part of this important work.
