Koskisen

Koskisen, a pioneer in the sawmill and board industry, has provided forest management services for over a hundred years. Koskisen uses Pinja’s solution in its forest management, which has improved its efficiency, and streamlined processes considerably.

The cooperation in brief

On the lookout for a modern solution

Koskisen wanted to find a way to modernize forest management while improving the efficiency and sustainability of operations.

Pinja’s forest management solution was selected for managing forestry services

Pinja’s modern forest management module was chosen, and it was deployed at the beginning of 2022 as part of the Forest by Pinja system. With the solution, Koskisen streamlined forest management processes and communication, making the daily work of the company’s experts and entrepreneurs easier.

Taking the solution forward together

The development of the solution is continued collaboratively, both by Koskisen’s experts and contractors, and by Pinja’s developers.

With our actions, we want to ensure that Finland continues to have prosperous forests and forest industries. The forest management solution is one tool in this work and in achieving our related objectives.

Sustainable work for the forests of the future

Koskisen’s forest management services, which involve a large network of different experts and actors, need to be supported by a modern system. That’s why the client was looking for a new type of technology to streamline and digitalize their forest management processes.

Koskisen already used the Forest by Pinja ERP system, so the Pinja forest management solution was a natural next step.

“We had a strong need to reform our forest management system, as the previous solution no longer met our needs in terms of sustainability and efficiency”, says Henni Vahto, Development Manager at Koskisen.

For Koskisen, sustainable forestry means working for the forests of the future, and the company wants to ensure that Finland continues to have prosperous forests and forest industries.

“With our actions, we want to ensure that Finland continues to have prosperous forests and forest industries. The forest management solution is one tool in this work and in achieving our related objectives”, says Vahto.

Pinja’s solution is a good way to ensure that information about the work sites is up-to-date, and working conditions are good, and the system informs about dangerous issues in advance, where possible.

Pinja’s solution enables efficient and controlled forest management.

Pinja’s solution has brought benefits, particularly in terms of its overall efficiency. Koskisen uses the forest management solution to make forest management offers and contracts, for work management and data transfer from the field, among other things. In practice, it manages all of Koskisen’s forestry services.

The solution has streamlined work guidance, information flow, and sustainable forest management in many ways. From the client’s point of view, the solution is particularly easy to use, and brings all the information they need in one place. In the browser-based application, information is transmitted in both directions, and does not require users to navigate between different pieces of information, as is the case in many ERP systems.

“Pinja’s forest management solution is a modern way for us to do our work, and users find it a particularly easy-to-use tool”, Vahto says.

Occupational safety is also an important issue for Koskisen, and a lot of effort is put into it. Pinja’s solution helps the client and their contractors to create safe working conditions on site. “Pinja’s solution is a good way to ensure that information about the work sites is up-to-date, and working conditions are good, and the system informs about dangerous issues in advance, where possible”, Vahto confirms.

Smooth deployment and good cooperation with Pinja

According to Vahto, the deployment of the product went well, although challenges were not avoided. The timing of the deployment was somewhat challenging, as winter is not a meaningful time to launch a new product from a forest management perspective, and the timeframe proved to be tight.

However, good collaboration overcame the scheduling challenges in deploying the solution, and the product supported a smooth implementation. The level of readiness of the product was at a high level when it was launched”, says Vahto, praising Pinja’s industry expertise. “Pinja had good developers on board and a strong understanding of what we do on a practical level.”

The cooperation has worked both ways, and it has sparked active discussions with Koskisen’s various stakeholders. Also on the board industry side, Koskisen uses, for example, the Gema by Pinja production monitoring system.

“Solid cooperation has made the project a success”, says Juha Valkola, Business Manager of Pinja’s forestry business. “We have worked closely together around the development of the module, and have had ongoing discussions about Koskisen’s needs at field level”.

Koskisen’s cooperation with Pinja continues, with the aim of improving the flow of forest management work and, for example, the chain of timber harvesting. “Technology in our industry is constantly evolving, and of course we want to evolve with the environment”, Vahto concludes.
